Private Charles Knight - Sherwood Foresters
   

Charles Edward Knight was born in Chellaston and baptised at St Peter’s Church on the 4th November 1888, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Knight.

In 1891 they lived in what was known as Noble Square in Chellaston and in 1901 they were in what was known as Village Street (probably High Street.) In 1910 Charles had married Nellie Blockley and in 1911 was living in New Yard, Melbourne.

Charles fought with the Sherwood Foresters in the 1/5th Battalion who were based in Derby and he was killed in action on the 24th September 1918, aged 30.

He is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial, France.
